Oh, baby.  Get ready, Chile, because the biggest thing to hit TV since the telenovela, is a telenovela mixed with a cooking competition.  TVN officially announced today that the first-ever season of Top Chef Chile will premiere on Thursday, September 25.  This could be a big game changer for Chile and its cuisine.  Are you as excited as we are?

Although a full list of the competitors has yet to be released, the majority are now listed on the show’s official website.  The cast includes restaurant owners, a sous chef from Boragó, pastry chefs, a former television star, and more.  For now, check the partial list on the website, and see if you can pick out the others from the picture.  Primetime Chilean TV drama will never be the same.

Buenos Aires’ 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off Will Take Place September 7 (ES)

[BA Chili Cookoff]

We were excited to hear this morning that there will, in fact, be another edition of the annual Buenos Aires Chili Cook-Off, as sponsored by Sugar and Spice Bakery.  Things will, however, be a little different this year.  The 4th annual competition will combine competitions in chili (the American-style soup that consists of meat, spices, and, sometimes, beans), locro (a similar, but even heartier Andean soup), as well as a brownie bake-off, just so guests can satisfy their sweet tooth.  Each competition will be limited to 10 competitors, which is quite a change from last year’s 26 different competitors.

Registration is now open for both competitors (here) and judges (here).  The event will take place Sunday, September 7 at Rabbit, located at Av. Scalabrini Ortiz 1648.  As usual, all proceeds will benefit SACS (Send A Child to School).  For more information, check the Sugar and Spice website.  Let’s get ready to rumble.

US $66,000).  Below, the exciting new TV spot.  Excited?

Is Chile Getting A Version Of ‘Top Chef’? (ES)

By Patrick Hieger

TOPCHEFCHILEWell, it appears that might be the case.  Cooperativa wrote this morning that television giant TVN has purchased rights to the show, and is in the process of casting.  According to José Miranda, an exec at TVN in charge of foreign programming, they realized it could “be a show for mass entertainment, even though I thought it was more of a niche product.”  According to Cooperativa, casting began this Monday, with filming possibly starting in August.  HOLY SHIT!  CHILE IS GOING TO HAVE TOP CHEF!!! We’ll be following this closely.  [via Cooperativa]

Foaming At The Mouth: Copa Cervezas de America / Congreso Cervecero

Every industry has their trade shows.  If you’re in the clothing business you go to events like Agenda or Magic.  In the art world there’s Art Basel and Frieze.  And, of course in the beer world, there’s dedicated trade shows and competitions held all over the world.
This past month, thousands of brewers converged on one of the brewing meccas of the world, Denver, Colorado, for the Craft Brewers Conference and the World Beer Cup. Brewing system fabricators, distributors, retail buyers, bar owners and breweries met for four days of panels, lectures, Q and A’s, trade meetings, and of course, tastings of a LOT of beer. With over 6,000 entries into the bi-annual World Beer Cup, this year’s competition was one of the stiffest yet. We here at Beervana were very proud to hear that Coronado Brewing won the esteemed titls of “Best Mid-Sized Brewery in the World,” and some of our beers brought home gold and silver medals in some of the most selective and competitive categories of the competition.
Here in Chile there are also events of a similar nature.  For the past few years there has been the Copa Cervezas de America, held here in Santiago, and also the Congreso Cervecero De Araucania held in Temuco. Last year, both events brought brewers, journalists, and purveyors from around the globe and both held competitions as well. However, the fact that both events were held on the exact same weekend left many people torn as to which to attend, and furthermore, which one was the definitive beer competition here in Chile.
Thankfully, both organizations met at the beginning of the year and the decision was made to merge the two events into one. More information on the actual name of the event will be released in the coming months, but we are very excited to hear that Chris White, founder of White Labs, one of the world’s best purveyors of craft beer, and Fal Allen, master brewer at Anderson Valley Brewing Company (shameless plug warning–Anderson Valley is imported by Beervana) will both be returning for this year’s event, with more invited guests to be confirmed in the coming months.

This yet-to-be-named event will take place September 2 to 6 in Temuco.

Calling all Argentine cooks.  Have you ever thought about putting your skills to the challenge on, well, not quite the big screen, but a screen that could potentially be seen by millions of viewers?  Ever thought what it might be like to win money that doesn’t come from the black market?  Well, if you have, then you might consider trying out for the newest wing of Master Chef in Argentina.  Casting is currently underway for the new show that is set to air on Telefe.

Just like the show in the United States that started it all, as well as the Peruvian version and others, Master Chef Argentina will put seasoned home cooks–without a professional chef title or background–against one another in a culinary competition that will test speed, technique, and overall finesse in the kitchen.  The lucky winner of the show will be awarded a cash prize, the title of Master Chef, and receive scholarships to continue on into a professional culinary career.  Instant fame!  Boom!

To apply, head on over to Telefe’s website and fill out the application.  Think you’ve got what it takes to be Master Chef?  Now’s your chance to show it.  [via Gastronomico Net]
