So, a very special time is upon us, and this year’s event is sure to propel the Chilean and South American culinary scene to a whole new level. I’m talking about this year’s edition of Ñam, as in nam nam nam nam nam, because it’s going to be freaking delicious.  Three days of some of Latin America’s best chefs and restaurateurs holding demos, workshops, and talks about their craft and trade. This year Ñam will be at the GAM (ha!), otherwise known as that big metal building near the Universidad Católica metro stop.
But, you’re probably wondering, what to do after seeing all of those gastronomical and culinary wunderkind?  Well friends, if you’re like me, you’ll probably be walking around Lastarria and Bellavista looking for a place to sit down and have a beer.  Below, check out a few spots for doing just that.
Valle De Oro | Bernardo O’Higgins 298
A Santiago classic, this “picada” style sandwich shop is almost directly across the street from the GAM, and has become home to hipster-ish art shows and fixed gear bike events.  Luckily, they’ve got a pretty solid beer lineup from Kross, Rothhammer, and some German favorites like Shoffenhoffer and Erdinger.
Berri | Rosal 321
This little gem on the corner of Rosal and Lastarria is a neighborhood classic. Make sure you check out the incredibly beautiful second floor, their homemade hamburgers, and their impressive lineup of constantly changing beer offerings.
Café Escondido | Rosal 346
Another hidden hotspot within Lastarria, Escondido has a massive selection of beers, plus a nice quiet patio with outdoor seating.  You can’t go wrong with this hidden gem.
Bocanaríz | Lastarria 276
What?! A wine bar on the beer expert’s list? Well, it’s true. This is the real-deal wine bar here in Santiago. The entire staff are sommeliers or sommeliers in training, and hey, a glass of wine every now and again is pretty delicious.
The White Rabbit | Antonia Lopez de Bello 0118
Sure, it’s a bit of a hike from Lastarria, but getting there is half the fun, right? The White Rabbit has a solid menu of late-night nibbles if you’re still hungry, plus their beer, wine and cocktail list is nothing to mess with. Hang out on the steps and watch the Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Any night partying go by in the heart of Bellavista.

See you at the show!

More Hogs Dog Collaborations During Ñam

By Patrick Hieger

Adding on to last week’s announcement that Virgilio Martínez would be collaborating with Santiago’s beloved Hogs on a special dog during Ñam, two more chefs will be participating in the collaboration as well.  Harry Sasson, of his eponymous Bogotá restaurant which sits at #22 on the list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, as well as Jorge Vallejo, of Mexico’s Quintonil which holds the #21 spot, will also be contributing to the salchichería’s special Ñam menu.  With three very different backgrounds and styles of cooking, there’s no telling what the chefs will bring to the menu throughout the four-day festival.  Per Hogs’ Facebook page, the dogs will be available starting April 3, opening day of Ñam.  We’ll see you there.

Virgilio Martínez Will Do A Special Dog At Hogs Durning Ñam

By Patrick Hieger

As part of the variety of specials that restaurants in and around Barrio Lastarria will be offering during Ñam, it seems as though Santiago’s beloved Hogs Salchichería has teamed up with Peruvian superstar chef Virgilio Martínez for a special dog.  According to Hogs’ Facebook page, the chef has put together an unforgettable combination that will be available starting next Thursday, April 3, the same day that Ñam opens.  We can only speculate what might top the dog or, what the dog might be made of.  Llama dog with mountain algae in coca bread?  Or maybe a ceviche dog with leche de tigre bbq sauce wrapped in quinoa bread?  Oh, the possibilities are endless.  Get yours next week.

The Friday Fix: Getting Caffeiñated During Ñam

By Patrick Hieger

There are two things that you can count on over the course of a food festival if you’re a serious participant;  lots of food, and lots of hangovers.  The food world is one of gluttony and overindulgence–which some might simply call pleasure–that often needs to be combated or remedied with cures that have been around for ages.  Enter coffee.  The food world’s answer to aches, pains, long nights, and rough mornings.  Now that Ñam has moved to Lastarria and the chances of after-parties have gotten a lot better, we know you’re going to be in serious need of some serious joe each morning of the festival.  So, here’s where to get your Ñam fix.

Gabriela Café | Centro GAM
If you just so happen to be running late and roll up to the GAM for the morning’s first lecture, don’t worry–there’s coffee.  Housed inside of the GAM is the Gabriela Café, which offers up a wide variety of coffee, cakes, juices, water, and so on.  From a proper espresso to a double cappuccino, this coffee shop at the heart of this year’s Ñam is bound to be a popular destination.

Wonderful Café | Lastarria 90
Just a block outside of the GAM in the heart of Lastarria is Wonderful Café, where Ñam’s organizers have been having quite a few caffeine-filled meetings throughout the planning process of the event.  With a wonderful terrace that’s great for people-watching, a solid selection of pastries and sandwiches, as well as a great cup of joe, Wonderful will provide the perfect cure for any hangover.

Colmado Coffee | Merced 346
Now established as one of the neighborhood’s–if not the city’s–favorite coffee shops, Colmado offers a slight reprieve from the epicenter of Ñam.  Just a block away from Calle Lastarria and tucked neatly into a courtyard just off the street, Colmado is the gourmet way to get rid of that hangover.  With a wide range of coffees and styles like infusion, dripper, and good old espresso, you’ve got a wide variety of options to get your fix.

Café de La Barra | José Miguel de la Barra 455
Moving just slightly further down the road, but still in easy walking distance of Ñam, is Café de La Barra, a staple in the neighborhood for years.  With antique finishes, a coffee and pastry selection as good as any in town, and a view of the street that will give you a prime view of the ‘hood’s hipsters, you can’t get much more ambience.

Hotel Ismael 312 | Ismael Valdés Vergara 312
Also appearing on our list of where to stay during Ñam, Hotel Ismael 312 offers a great café with a luxurious environment and highly modernized finishes.  The hotel is still waiting on some licensing to get their restaurant open, but for a proper cup of coffee and a taste of what will undoubtedly become one of Santiago’s go-to boutique hotels, you won’t soon find a better lobby café in the neighborhood.

Ñam kicks off next week bringing with it a long list of presentations, chef demos & talks, tapas and much more, all in the GAM cultural center in Barrio Lastarria. If the show leaves you feeling inspired for a glass of wine following the day’s close, here are three nearby options to get into the feeling:

Bocanariz | José Victorino Lastarria 276
The obvious choice, and Santiago’s only true wine bar. There are plenty of bars with wine, but here it’s the main act. With more than 300 wines available by the bottle, some 35 by the glass, this place is all about selection. What’s even better is that you can order flights, three samples all centered around one theme. They have a selection of small, international dishes, but the wine is the standout here.

Gatopardo | José Victorino Lastarria N° 192
This is the option if you want to eat as well and are not looking for a flight. Serving Mediterranean dishes, Gatopardo is housed in an old Colonial style building and has been in Barrio Lastarria for more than 20 years–in other words, before the neighborhood became the culinary hub it is today.  They are also operating the incredible space across the street from GAM in the Universidad Catolica campus, called La Cava. A must see set refurbished brick cellar, but that still awaits the liquor license.

Santiago Wine Club | Rosal 386
So forget about the glass, go for a bottle and take it home or wherever else your path might take you. The Santiago Wine Club distributes and stocks a wide variety of producers, paying special attention to the independent winemakers and boutique vineyards.  It’s small, but packed with quality goods, offering also beer and a few artisan beers. Their sales floor is located in Barrio Lastarria, but they also distribute to your home.

Ñam Sessions: Big Dinners With The Biggest Chefs

By Patrick Hieger

As part of next week’s Ñam, Santiago’s largest and most important food festival that will take over Barrio Lastarria for four days, there’s going to be some dinners.  Yes, there will be Ñam-related specials at the majority of restaurants within Lastarria.  But we’re not talking about those dinners–we’re talking about Dinners, with that imposing capital D.  Ñam Sessions, part of the new lineup of events surrounding this year’s makeover of the festival, will bring together some of the greatest chefs from around South America, and even Spain, for one-night only dinners that are bound to be sensational.

Three of the dinners will take place during the festival, on April 3 and 4, while the other will take place April 9, as part of Ñam’s ongoing mission to keep the message of the festival going long past its close.  Each of the dinners is priced at $70.000 CLP per person and will feature a select group of chefs taking turns at making an unforgettable six course meal.  Reservation information is listed on each flyer, and in the description.  The schedule looks like this:
